Hobbs Protected Taxes on Renters

SB 1184 would have banned municipal taxes on residential leases. Hobbs said no.

Rent is already too high. Hobbs vetoed the bill that would have stopped cities from taxing those leases.

SB 1184 was aimed at giving renters breathing room. Hobbs claimed it wouldn’t help. Renters still got the tax. Landlords still passed costs through. Hobbs still got the veto.

When the landlord raises rent “because of fees and taxes,” remember who refused to take the tax off the table.
