THE CONTEXT: Political Sign-Free Zones Municipalities and counties are prohibited from removing political signs in certain circumstances. However, commercial tourism, commercial resort and hotel sign-free zones are exempt from this requirement.

WHAT THE BILL DID: The final vetoed version would prescribe the following requirements for sign free zones: a) The total area may not be larger than three square miles; b) Each zone's area must not exceed 10% of the total area of the municipality; c) Each zone must have a reock score of.10 or more; and d) A municipality may establish one or more zones within these zones that allow political signs, however those areas must be included in the calculations of the area of the total zone.

WHY IT MATTERED: The practical reason for this bill was to create an operative state process for political signs instead of leaving implementation undefined. It would prescribe the following requirements for sign free zones: a) The total area may not be larger than three square miles; b) Each zone's area must not exceed 10% of the total area of the municipality; c) Each zone must have a reock score of.10 or more; and d) A municipality may establish one or more zones within these zones that allow political signs, however those areas must be included in the calculations of the area of the total zone, rather than leave the current rule unchanged.
