THE CONTEXT: AI means a machine-based system that can, for a given set of human-defined objectives, make predictions, recommendations or decisions influencing real or virtual environments. AI systems use machine and human-based inputs to: 1) perceive real and virtual environments; 2) abstract such perceptions into models through analysis in an automated manner; and 3) use model inference to formulate options for information or action ( 15 U.

WHAT THE BILL DID: The final vetoed version would requires, beginning in the 2027-2028 school year, each school district to offer instruction on the ethical, moral and educational uses of AI to specific grade levels, instruct the school district to incorporate the AI instruction into existing instruction or a separate course, and direct the school district to submit, by October 15 of each year, a report to ADE that describes the instruction and enrollment metrics for the course.

WHY IT MATTERED: The practical reason for this bill was to give students, families, and schools a clearer statewide rule for artificial intelligence. It would requires, beginning in the 2027-2028 school year, each school district to offer instruction on the ethical, moral and educational uses of AI to specific grade levels, and would also instruct the school district to incorporate the AI instruction into existing instruction or a separate course, rather than leave the current rule unchanged.
